Overview
Hampton, Georgia was once known as “Bear Creek” or “Bear Creek Station”, named after a creek that runs through the area. The town was moved, established, and renamed in 1873 when the Central Railroad of Georgia was built approx. one mile to the east. It was named after Brig. General Wade Hampton, an American soldier in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Located in southwestern Henry County, as of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 6,987.

Atlanta Motor Speedway
Offers year-round fun for avid motorsport fans, this is the center of the NASCAR Cup Series world once a year. When not hosting NASCAR races, the track holds other special events, including the Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama, the Georgia State Fair, the Atlanta Air Show and more. The Atlanta Motor Speedway is the site of Richard Petty’s final race and Jeff Gordon’s first race – both events occurring during the same event in 1992.
Army Aviation Heritage Foundation & Flying Museum
Situated next to the Atlanta Motor Speedway, this museum offers free hangar tours at its Legacy Chapter. According to the website, the AAHF presents the story of Army Aviation, connecting the American solider to the American public. A national, nonprofit public educational foundation, the AAHF acquires, restores and maintains vintage Vietnam-era aircrafts. Through flying presentations, helicopter rides, educational presentations and other events, their Sky Soldiers teach the public about Army Aviation. Volunteers are comprised of military veterans from several eras, including Vietnam, Gulf War and Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan, as well as active and patriotic civilian members.
North Mt Carmel Park
Henry County’s largest public playground situated on 129 acres. Fitness circuit, handicap accessible equipment, walking/jogging track, 2 picnic pavilions, 14 soccer fields, bark park and more.
Nash Farm Battlefield
This 204-acre public park is located in far western Henry County on its line with Clayton County, about 21 miles south of Atlanta. During the second half of 1864, the Nash Farm was the scene of considerable military activity.
Melvin L Wetland Center
This is the focal point of the Clayton County Water Authority’s community education efforts. NWC is a natural area dedicated to environmental education that includes approximately one mile of trails through wetland and forest habitats and a learning center with a classroom and exhibits.
Since opening their gates to the public in 1995, people have come to learn about wetlands, bird, photograph wildflowers, and to find a peaceful place to relax, and spend time with loved ones.
