Overview

Situated about 30 miles south of Atlanta, its population was 22,084 at the 2010 census. The town was named for naval officer Commodore Thomas Macdonough and founded in 1823. There is a traditional town square design, with historic buildings surrounding the square still intact. The county courthouse and historic jail are on the north side near the Welcome Center in an historically maintained Standard Oil service station that was built in 1920. The station also houses the Main Street Program Office and Hospitality and Tourism Office.

Henry County/McDonough is sometimes called the “Mother of Counties” as its original land area stretched from near Indian Springs in the south to the Chattahoochee River near Sandy Springs in the north. Within a year of its creation, Henry County/McDonough was broken up to form all or parts of 8 different counties.

Heritage Park Veterans Museum

Tours are led by veterans who share the stories about the owners of the museum’s collection of historical items, which includes vehicles, military memorabilia, uniforms and more ranging from World War I to the present. The museum’s library invites guests to explore dioramas of important moments in America’s military history, while the chapel provides a place for reflection and paying respect to fallen heroes. Plan a visit to the Veterans Wall of Honor before leaving the park. Tours are available Monday through Saturday.
