Our team is made up of a wide variety of characters, and we pride ourselves on our
unique environment. While we’re each a little different in our own way, we all have one
thing in common: the drive and desire to help people move.
Chief Executive Officer
Mike Kalis, Chief Executive Officer, joined Marketplace Homes in 2007. One year later, he purchased the company for $25,000. Marketplace Homes' first office was located in Mike's living room. In four short years, he expanded the company into 30 markets, hired nearly 100 employees and saw revenue rise to $20 million. With a 1700 percent growth rate, Marketplace Homes is one of the fastest growing success stories in the United States.
Mike and Marketplace Homes have been featured in over 50 different media outlets, including Fox Business, The Detroit News, Chicago's Daily Herald and Builder magazine. New construction home builders throughout the country seek Mike out as a speaker, and he has been recognized by Crain's Detroit Business as a "Top 20 in their 20s." Under Mike's leadership, Marketplace Homes has been named Real Estate Company of the Year by the American Business Awards, one of the "50 Companies to Watch" by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, and the 189th Fastest Growing Company in the United States by Inc. magazine.
Prior to joining Marketplace Homes, Mike worked in sales at one of the nation's largest new construction home builders, Pulte Homes. He graduated from Michigan State University in 2004.
Chief Operating Officer
Mark Shaftner, Chief Operating Officer, joined Marketplace Homes in 2010. Initially a Solutions Consultant, Mark helped start up and quickly expand sales in the Atlanta area. He was promoted to Director of Property Management, where he helped build an incredible team that increased Marketplace Homes' customer satisfaction rating to over 90 percent.
In his role as COO, Mark oversees the Communications, Sales and Property Management departments. Prior to joining Marketplace Homes, he worked for over a decade in the new construction housing industry, and in sales at Pulte Homes for eight years.
Mark is passionate about inventing, innovating and implementing creative ways to interact with customers. He graduated from Central Michigan University and has been married to his wife, Stacia, for six years.
Chief Marketing Officer
Chintan Pathak, Chief Marketing Officer, joined Marketplace Homes in 2010 and has been the driving force behind all marketing, advertising and public relations initiatives. Chintan manages a multimillion-dollar marketing budget and has a proven track record for delivering remarkable results. He oversees an exceptionally talented marketing team that continues to change the way real estate is marketed and advertised in an outdated industry. Chintan is a firm believer in the company's core value of "creating a story worth telling."
Prior to his work at Marketplace Homes, Chintan co-founded the first U.S.-based South Asian record label, WITNIS Project, launching the start up to international status in over 25 countries. Chintan graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Marketing. Outside the office, he is a "DJ by night" who travels to new destinations, entertaining dance floors across the world.
Chief Technology Officer
Jeff Arwady, Chief Technology Officer, joined Marketplace Homes in 2012, and oversees all technical processes and project development. Jeff brings 10 years of technology experience to the company, including five years with Apple.
He built the bulk of Marketplace Homes' systems and processes and helped to found the technology department. Prior to joining Marketplace Homes, Jeff served as a Creative with Apple, where he facilitated one-on-one technology product training for both staff and customers. He also taught at Michigan State University, Central Michigan University and Madonna University. Jeff graduated from Central Michigan University with Bachelor's and Master's degree.
VP, Business Development
Joel Parrott, Vice President of Business Development, joined Marketplace Homes in 2010. As a Solutions Consultant, Joel sold 141 homes and was recognized as Top New Construction Home Salesperson of the Year by Builder magazine. Joel was promoted to Vice President in 2011 and now oversees the addition and development of markets across the country.
Prior to joining Marketplace Homes, Joel worked in sales at Pulte Homes for five years. He graduated from the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in Marketing and Management, and received his Master's degree in Real Estate Management and Development from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.
Director of Communications
Leslie Owens, Director of Communications, joined Marketplace Homes in 2011 as a member of the communications team. Her business strategy and creativity were quickly recognized and led to her promotion, where she remains dedicated to providing top quality client services. Leslie graduated from Eastern Michigan University.
Cole Young, General Counsel of Marketplace Homes, serves as chief legal support to all clients. He oversees all internal and external contracts, regulatory issues and collections. Before joining Marketplace Homes, Cole was in private practice for five years, representing clients ranging in size from sole proprietors to Fortune 500 companies, in real estate, construction, labor and employment transactions, and litigation.
He graduated from Michigan State University in 2004 and received his Juris Doctor from New York Law School in 2007. Cole was Senior Class Council President at MSU, and Executive Editor of the Moot Court Team and Vice Chair of Public Interest Coalition at New York Law School.
Director of Property Management
Matt Marsoupian, Director of Property Management, joined Marketplace Homes in 2011 as a solutions consultant. He was promoted to his current role in 2013 and now oversees the daily operations of Marketplace Homes’ property management division, which manages over 1,600 properties in 32 states across the country.
Prior to joining Marketplace Homes, Matt worked in new construction sales at Pulte Homes and as an associate broker at Friedman Real Estate Group, a national commercial real estate and property management company. He is a licensed real estate salesperson.
He graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in business management. Matt lives in metro Detroit with his wife and two children.
Director of Finance
Lindsay Spellman, Director of Finance, joined Marketplace Homes in 2011. With hundreds of new clients, Lindsay was brought on board initially to strengthen the finance arm of a rapidly growing business. Lindsay’s astounding ability to resolve growth issues combined with her innovative ideas and dedication to positive results lead to her promotion to manage this department.
Lindsay previously worked with a California CPA firm doing audit and tax work for businesses on the West Coast. She moved back to Michigan and continued to work with local CPA firms. After deciding working in the private industry was where she belonged, Lindsay joined Marketplace Homs where her energy, creativity and dedication to her team are welcome in a fast paced environment.
Lindsay graduated from Walsh College with a bachelors’ degree in Finance.
Director of Human Resources
Cindy Bannan, Director of HR and Employees Happiness, joined Marketplace Homes in 2011. She maintains and enhances all things Human Resources, with particular emphasis on employee relations, quality of work-life, and development of the individual.
Cindy has a passion for working with people to achieve their potential, while bringing a unique set of knowledge and expertise to her position. In addition to more than 20 years in small business management at Distinctive Dental Services, Cindy most recently provided counseling assistance to abused and neglected children and their families through Michigan-based CBC Services; she was the District Coordinator of Assessment and Testing, and the Junior/Senior High School Guidance Counselor at New Lothrop Area Public Schools; and she taught numerous traditional and on-line undergraduate courses in business and psychology as Adjunct Faculty for the Baker College system.
Cindy holds a Bachelor’s degree in advertising from Michigan State University; a Master’s degree in counseling from Central Michigan University; and MBA from Saginaw Valley State University. She is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the American Counseling Association (ACA).
Steven C. Petruska
Steve Petruska is the founder and President of The SCP Group, LLC. The SCP Group provides real estate consulting services and operational solutions to home building and real estate companies, banks, hedge funds, REITs and individuals. With over 30 years of residential, large and small-scale land planning, land development, and commercial real estate experience, and a background in operating team selection, evaluation and development, The SCP Group offers a wide range of services to large and small companies.
Steve is the former Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for PulteGroup, Inc. During his 26 years at PulteGroup, he also served as Area President, Regional President, Division President and Division Vice President of Finance. He led a team that encompassed all operational aspects of the company's domestic home-building operations, and provided oversight to the company's Pulte Building Services subsidiary units throughout the country. Steve earned a reputation as a clear communicator with a consistent vision and an outstanding leader. He retired from PulteGroup in August 2010.
Steve received his Bachelor's degree in Accounting at Central Michigan University in 1981. He also obtained his CPA in the state of Texas.
Steve currently serves on the Orleans Homebuilders, Inc. Board of Directors, and as an advisor to Michigan-based Marketplace Homes, LLC and NSG Development, LLC.
